About Me

I am a journalist covering water, energy, space, and politics. I’ve worked for two local outlets, the Aspen Daily News and the Arizona Republic, and I’ve published freelance work in publications like High Country News and the Daily Yonder. I’ve covered the stagnated negotiations on the Colorado River, the rise (and struggles) of Arizona’s solar industry, pollution in high-mountain streams, and the changing face of space-based solar power.

Before I became a journalist, I worked in policy and politics. I got my bachelor’s degree in international relations with a minor in Arabic language from Georgetown in 2020. I traveled the Middle East during and after college, usually focusing on water and energy issues. I implemented wastewater treatment solutions in the West Bank, researched the social impacts of oil development in Kuwait, and dug into the only public archives from the world’s largest oil company: Saudi Aramco.

I grew up in Colorado’s Roaring Fork Valley with a water lawyer as a father (for the East Coasters, that means an attorney who specializes in the West’s complex system of water rights) and a mother who grew up in the same valley, ski racing and raising steers for 4-H competitions. I spent solid chunks of my childhood rafting desert rivers, skiing powder, and wondering why everything was.

I’m a nonpartisan journalist. I do not give money to causes, other than a few gifts to journalism-related nonprofits and Buddhist centers (where I go to meditate), and the occasional small donation to Wikipedia. Before I became a professional journalist, I worked for a political campaign in Colorado, providing policy advice for Congressional candidate Adam Frisch. Since then, I have not donated to any political campaigns or organizations. I always vote when I can. I have opinions, but they always change as I learn more about the world. I keep my personal biases out of my reporting so I can focus on finding the most useful, accurate, and thought-provoking stories for my readers.
